Larger plates provide excellent protection during intense medieval combat (the energy of the strikes are absorbed over the larger area of each plate), and the clever anatomical construction helps to ensure you stay extremely mobile and agile (with much of the weight resting on your hips) while moving about the list and tanking all the damage. 
Buckles in the front of the brigandine make putting on and removing the brig a quick and easy process compared to other designs. The ‘font-buckle’ design also offers superior protection and maneuverability compared to those that buckle from the side (you don’t want to get hit in the ribs with small plates and buckles for protection!)
