The top 3 lames/segments are designed to collapse into each other slightly, allowing you to raise your arms to protect yourself or your mates, or to unleash a volley of devastating strikes or takedowns.
The top 3 of 5 total lames flare out slightly in front to allow for fantastic range-of-motion, while remaining close enough to the chest to provide incredible gap coverage and avoid snagging on armor and weapons.
The middle lame, and largest of the 5 segments has a more anatomical shape, conforming to the shoulder and upper bicep, which allows the articulated segments to have a smoother range of natural movement - and offer thereby, greater protection.
